I
recently moved from Pokeepsie, NY to Raleigh, NC. A friend and
I , driving a 14' U-Haul with my car in tow, drove straight thru.
It only took 13-14 hours.
I should point out that we left at 5:00 PM and drove overnight.
It was a full moon. When we started it was low in the east. As
we progressed, we could track it as it made its way accross the
sky, till it dropped past the Virginia trees, about 1 hour before
sunup.
Now, I was riding shotgun as we were going thru Virginia. Those
trees! It seemed as if they made a solid wall, in the darkness,
they seemed like one organism.
But in the half-light of false dawn, I could see that they were,
after all, just pine trees, singular and yet with a common purpose:
To shield the countryside from Autos. They appeared to me to be
gene-spliced, quick growing connifers, like the loggers plant
after cutting down ancient trees.
I like North Carolina so far, even though my mail takes a week
to get forwarded. I think there is not much water here (lakes,
rivers). I suppose I was spoiled living on the banks of the mighty
Hudson. But I think there must be wilderness in the smokey mountians,
on the western edge of this state. I will speak more of this latr.
